    "Middle Class" Magic

As any followers of the Forest Bear Studios YouTube channel know, Chubby and Atkst occasionally battle a format of MTG they call "Middle Class" Magic. They make and use decks composed of cards having been printed at the uncommon rarity that are legal in the Legacy format (obeying the WOTC official banned list), in conjunction with basic lands. I find this format fascinating and wide open. I think it can provide very fun experiences in casual magic. In addition to this, it is a considerably cheap form of MTG, much like Pauper. I would like to have this thread serve as a place for fans of this format to congregate, talk about possible decks and generally develop interest in possibly playing some paper magic matches of MCMTG.

Check out some of the lists they have played here: http://tappedout.net/users/ForestBearStudios/

I would also like to foster discussion by being the first to post a list that I would potentially play in MCMTG. Without further ado, here is my list:

    AGENT ELF COMBO-CADE:
    =================
    Creatures (16):
    4x Bloodbraid Elf
    4x Monastery Swiftspear
    4x Shardless Agent
    4x Young Pyromancer

    Instants (22):
    4x Brain Freeze
    2x Chain of Plasma
    4x Fire/Ice
    4x Lightning Bolt
    4x Manamorphose
    4x Remand

    Lands (22):
    4x City of Brass
    4x Frontier Bivouac
    1x Gruul Turf
    4x Island
    1x Izzet Boilerworks
    7x Mountain
    1x Simic Growth Chamber

It is a Cascade-based value deck in Temur colors. I have no idea if the lands are what they should be because I have yet to play a match with it. However, I really like the premise behind it! Comments are welcomed and appreciated!

EDIT: Here's a primitive attempt at a sideboard:

    SIDEBOARD (4/15):
    4x Far/Away

I have also been able to come up with a more budget-friendly decklist since my first post. The design behind this one is relatively simple, as it is a ramp strategy. Check it out:

    BARRAGE OF BEARS:
    =====================
    Creatures (12):
    4x Jaddi Offshoot
    4x Veteran Explorer
    4x Yavimaya Dryad

    Sorceries (8):
    4x Explosive Vegetation
4x Howl of the Night Pack

    Instants (4):
    4x Harrow

    Enchantments (8):
    4x Retreat to Kazandu
    4x Zendikar's Roil

    Lands (28):
    3x Blighted Woodland
    4x Treetop Village
    21x Forest

I have also managed to scrounge together a very primitive sideboard, seeing as your mainboard plan probably gets a lot worse after boarding.

    SIDEBOARD (8/15):
    4x Baloth Woodcrasher
    4x Constant Mists

All right, last one for awhile; the degenerate in me wanted to make a gross prison deck. Here is my stab at that:

    WORM POX:
    ========
    Artifacts (12):
    4x Lotus Petal
    4x Charcoal Diamond
    4x Sphere of the Suns

    Enchantments (8):
    4x Blight
    4x Pooling Venom

    Sorceries (8):

    4x Smallpox
    4x Worm Harvest

    Instants (8):
    4x Rain of Filth
    4x Cabal Ritual

    Lands (24):
    4x Dakmor Salvage
    4x Ghost Quarter
    4x Wasteland
    4x Ebon Stronghold
    4x Ancient Tomb
    1x Bog Wreckage
    3x Swamp

The sideboard for this one kind of has to contain a transformative element. The big potential switch is one 4-of retrace win condition for another. Here it is!

    SIDEBOARD (11/15):
    4x Syphon Blood
    2x Sun Droplet
    2x Underworld Dreams
    2x Virulent Plague
    1x Zuran Orb

All three of these decks are fairly interesting.

I especially like the Worm Harvest deck, as I always wanted to build a deck around it. It never clicked that it made the jump down to uncommon in Modern Masters, so the shell is great. Rain of Filth into multiple harvests seems terrifying to face off against.

Yeah, fast mana and value generation makes Rain of Filth just incredible in this deck. Dakmor Salvage is a rather good recursion engine. Being able to Worm Harvest every turn is hard to beat, and you can start the chain fairly early. Have any lists you would care to share that you're currently working on?

    Sure, why not.

    Naya Big Burn!!

    Creatures (14)
    4 Bloodbraid Elf
    4 Burning-Tree Emissary
    3 Fanatic of Xenagos
    3 Kitchen Finks

    Spells (22)
    4 Boros Charm
    4 Lightning Bolt
    4 Lightning Helix
    4 Stoke the Flames
    2 Surreal Memoir
    4 Warleader's Helix

    Lands (24)
    1 Blighted Steppe
    2 Boros Garrison
    4 Forest
    2 Graypelt Refuge
    4 Jungle Shrine
    3 Kazandu Refuge
    4 Mountain
    3 Plains
    1 Selesnya Sanctuary

The deck is based around the two Helix cards and the fact they gain you life, which helps support the deck being a lot slower because of lack of redundant burn.

So, I just recently watched Randy Buehler's Modern No Banned List playlist for Gauntlet of Greatness. He had the Thopter Sword deck on there. You know which two cards are totally printed at uncommon? Thopter Foundry and Sword of the Meek. So here that is:

    EN-SWORD-NITHOPTER
    ============
    Land (20):
    4x Arcane Sanctum
    3x Darksteel Citadel
    2x Island
    2x Jwar Isle Refuge
    2x Plains
    4x Sejiri Refuge
    1x Swamp
1x Tomb of the Spirit Dragon
    1x Foundry of the Consuls

    Creature (18):
    4x Chief of the Foundry
    4x Memnite
    2x Myr Retriever
    4x Ornithopter
    4x Runed Servitor

    Instant (6):
    2x Orzhov Charm
    4x Path to Exile

    Artifact (12):
    4x Chromatic Star
    4x Sword of the Meek
    4x Thopter Foundry

    Enchantment (4):
    4x Ensoul Artifact

I literally just tried making this thing, so what I have so far in the board is a total crapshoot. I imagine that token hate would be pretty good against this deck, so maybe we could put some Zulaport Cutthroat/Blood Artist action in there? Cutthroat actually seems better since our removal sweet is exile based and he is a 1/1 for Sword to trigger from the yard. I have playtested this a couple of times on tappedout.net, and my one concern is that I seem to be flooding quite a bit, despite having only twenty lands. Thoughts?

    SIDEBOARD (?/15):
    ?x Zulaport Cutthroat
    ?x Dispatch
    2x Orzhov Charm

Here's another deck for you Johnnies out there that features your good ol' friend Mr. Hedron Crab:

    CRAB TUTES:
    =========
    Land (24):
    4x Cephalid Coliseum
    4x Dimir Aqueduct
    2x Duskmantle, House of Shadow
    10x Island
    4x Jwar Isle Refuge

    Enchantment (8):
    4x Propaganda
    4x Sphinx's Tutelage

    Instant (11):
    4x Brain Freeze
    3x Counterspell
    4x Dampen Thought

    Sorcery (5):
    1x Fascination
    4x Mind Funeral

    Creature (8):
    4x Dakra Mystic
    4x Hedron Crab

    Artifact (4):
    4x Elixir of Immortality

My imagination has been going wild the last few days. I don't know how competitive this list could actually be, but it has some really strong cards in it as far as milling goes. The games where you curve Hedron Crab into Hedron Crab and play Dimir Aqueduct are silly. I typically don't play mill strategies, however, so I don't know what all you do with the sideboard.

    SIDEBOARD (4/15):
    4x Jace's Phantasm

I noticed so far that many of the lists posted don't seek to play fair magic hardly at all (though that isn't true for Chubby and Atkst, who have played several fair lists over the course of their videos). I thought a deck that did--from me, that is--would be a nice refresher. Thus, the following came to be:

    HYMN TO TOU-ROCK:
    ===============
    Land (24):
    4x Akoum Refuge
    4x City of Brass
    2x Mountain
    4x Nomad Outpost
    2x Orzhov Basilica
    4x Rocky Tar Pit
    4x Swamp

    Instant (12):
    4x Lightning Bolt
    2x Lightning Helix
    4x Mardu Charm
    2x Murderous Cut

    Creature (16):
    4x Gatekeeper of Malakir
    4x Nightfire Giant
    4x Stromkirk Captain
    4x Vampire Nighthawk

    Sorcery (8):
    4x Hymn to Tourach
    4x Inquisition of Kozilek

I imagine the sideboard would contain some cards to deal with decks strong against spot removal. Other than that, I am not quite sure what options I have to put in here.

    SIDEBOARD (5/15):
    2x Drown in Sorrow
    2x Bile Blight
    1x Virulent Plague

Hope to see some discussion on these lists soon! That said, thanks still to all the lurkers out there. Feel free to post your own lists!

I haven't played Magic much since Zendikar (2010), but I loved me some vampires.

Does that mean you might take this list for a spin? I'd love to hear your thoughts and/or results if you do.

Well, I don't know how many more decklists I have in me, but I'm going to keep them coming for as long as I am able (though most likely at a gradually slowing pace). I was talking to my friend at dinner today about how exciting I think the potential of MCMTG is, and he mentioned that he thought some reanimation spells were uncommon. Long-story-short, here this monstrosity is:

    PELAKKA FLOCK OF FAME:
    =================
    Creature (14):
    4x Pelakka Wurm
    2x Penumbra Wurm
    1x Plated Crusher
    4x Street Wraith
    2x Symbiotic Wurm
    1x Trostani's Summoner
    Enchantment (8):
    4x Animate Dead
    4x Zombie Infestation

    Sorcery (13):
    4x Flux
    4x Footsteps of the Goryo
    2x Sickening Dreams
    3x Stitch Together

    Land (22):
    4x Dakmor Salvage
    4x Dimir Aqueduct
    4x Jwar Isle Refuge
    10x Swamp

    Instant (3):
    3x Murderous Cut

So as this format start to shape up in my head, I am beginning to notice how the decks are laying out. The strategies are widespread and incorporate a vast amount of different cards with different functions for fun and interesting interactions, but so far tokens are REALLY strong. That makes decks capable of dealing with tokens strong as well. Basically, I'm starting to figure out what sideboards might look like.

    SIDEBOARD (15/15):
    2x Archetype of Endurance
    2x Drown in Sorrow
    1x Murderous Cut
    2x Plated Crusher
    4x Psychatog
    2x Sickening Dreams
    2x Virulent Plague

If I test play any decks in the near future, I'll be sure to do that one. I'm fairly busy with coding projects at the moment. =)

Well that's perfectly fair. It's still awfully nice for you to say so. I hope you do get to!

But I shall stick to the name Middle Class because it fits best along with Pauper and Peasant in that it represents the wealth and status of a certain group of people. The Middle Class.
